The CySEC warns traders against the OptionSmarter broker

It has been several weeks since the regulator of financial markets CySEC (Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission) that deals with regulating the financial industry in the European territory had not cringed about binary options brokers. For several weeks now, the Cyprus Commission in charge of overseeing the trading industry is once again creating a buzz. After more than a month without carrying out repressive action against brokers, the CySEC shows us again its severe regulations and informs that it remains present in the financial industry and continues to monitor the behavior of financial institutions within the European Union by publishing a warning against the OptionSmarter binary options broker.

The CySEC’s warning against OptionSmarter

The OptionSmarter broker offers individuals its investment services in binary options through its www.optionsmarter.com website. This is a fairly well known brand within the trading industry behind which lies the Mercuria Technologies Ltd. company, its owner, with its head office based on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Despite its location, which is the same as the CySEC, the broker does not have the license of the financial Regulator. The CySEC warns traders and all other investors against the Mercuria Technologies Ltd. company and specifies that it does not have any kind of authorization permitting it to offer its services in the country. Therefore, at European level, since the jurisdiction of the CySEC extends throughout Europe, the broker’s website is theoretically unauthorized. Thus, the regulator warns traders against using the services of the broker and implies that it would be best to opt for binary options brokers that are regulated by the CySEC and the FCA.

The CySEC, a draconian regulator

In our February article dealing with the projects of the CySEC regulator in 2014, we have seen that the agency planned to strengthen censures amongst traders through increased communication. Binary options form a real financial activity, it is not a simple game, which is why the regulator considers this trading instrument a very serious object. Due to the rigorous approach of the regulator towards binary options, the brokers do not have any other choice besides obtaining the CySEC license in order to reflect a credible and serious image to traders and attract their business.

These last few months have witnessed the sanctions and censure enforced ??against the brokers that do not have any authorization allowing them to legally provide binary options trading in the European Union. These sanctions have been particularly severe with the CySEC regulator. The final announcement of the regulatory authority were quite negative. Going back to its past records from the beginning of the year 2014, we can see that the CySEC first proceeded to issuing a warning against the LBinary broker, then it  rejected the license application of ShortOption prior to imposing fines against OptionsBravo and ChargeXP and suspending the license of the Cedar Finance broker due to several violations of the European financial regulation observed with this broker.

OptionSmarter through the viewfinder of the French regulator AMF

The warning of the CySEC regulator against the OptionSmarter binary options broker is not the first negative message that a regulator issues to investors against this broker. If we examine the AMF’s blacklist that includes 75 binary options brokers to avoid. Given that they are not authorized to provide their services in France, we can note that the OptionSmarter name appears again. The broker is quite popular in the trading industry and displays a fairly serious image in spite of the warning issued by financial regulators. Nevertheless, it is advisable for traders to avoid this broker and to rather opt for regulated binary options brokers that have the necessary licenses and carry out their brokerage business in full compliance with the local financial laws.
